Week One
My final project will create a way to track and store information about food use in the home. It will provide the ability to scan and track food items placed into a refrigerator and monitor the contents and expiration dates of the items. By linking with a web service, the user will be able to create alerts based on food items being near empty as well as track the usage of food in the household.
A user needs to simply scan and weigh the new food item when placing it into the refrigerator to start the tracking process. Then, whenever an item is used, scan and weigh again to track usage.
When a food item is running low (based on the weight), a user can set up a text or email alert to remind them to get more of that item. The program will also track usage per food item against the expiration date to give an accurate picture of how food is used or not used in that particular household.
By creating a shelf and attaching the appropriate weight sensors, you can track food usage in a pantry without the scale. The user must only scan the item and place it back on the shelf to register a change in weight. The same links and alerts can be set up on the pantry as the refrigerator.
During week one, we were asked to decide on a potential final project. I have chosen to create a food monitoring system for a refrigerator or pantry.
The idea is that the system will be able to send alerts when food is low or expired. A user group could also tie it into a database to monitor food use and waste.
